Data processing - FLIP7
FLIP7 Data Processing Software
To be able to view and extract information from FLI-MAP LiDAR data Fugro developed the FLI-MAP Data
Processing System, FLIP7. FLIP7 is a Windows application that over the last 9 years has been developed into a very versatile
tool to visualize and process LiDAR data. The software merges the system position and attitude information with the LiDAR
sensor data, photo- and video imagery and the RGB-values.
FLIP7 offers a wide array of LiDAR data filters which support the data analysis, presentation and
feature extraction. To identify features and objects in the LiDAR data FLIP7 provides CAD capabilities "on top of" the
LiDAR data. Any available ortho-photos or digitized maps can be imported to provide geo-referenced backdrop imagery
Major Features of FLIP7
Intuitive user interface
Since FLIP7 is a true Microsoft Window application, the user interface is based on standard Windows programming conventions.
The look and feel of the program is very natural to both experienced and novice Windows users
Projections and Datum
FLIP7 incorporates a comprehensive geodetic library supporting most datum transformations and map projections used world wide.
Datum transformations and projections can be adjusted using parameter files to accommodate most requirements.
To reduce the WGS84 ellipsoidal height to a desired orthometric height reference system FLIP7 applies geoid modelling.
Any available geoid model can be refined to increase the absolute accuracy using local correction modelling.
Visualization of the LiDAR data
FLIP7 offers the user various ways to look at the LiDAR data using different viewing perspectives (top view, profile view,
dynamic 3D view and user adjustable colouring schemas. The colouring schemas can be connected to the point elevation to visualize
the vertical relief or reflected intensity to distinguish objects with different reflective properties or to any attribute generated
by the filters (see next paragraph).
Using the RGB values captured with the line scan camera a real “as is” visualization of the surveyed
corridor/area can be realized enabling the user to view the area from various points of view, which results in an easy
and reliable interpretation of the terrain situation.
To ease the data interpretation FLIP7 offers full synchronization between the LiDAR data and available
imagery data (video or digital still images) with a simple click on a LiDAR point the associated video and/or digital still
imagery will be presented to the user.
LiDAR filters
A very powerful feature of FLIP7 is the ability to analyze the LiDAR data set using filters. A wide range of filters is
standard available. These filters can be combined in which output results of one filter can be used as input for a next filter.
This way very powerful filter configurations can be build.
Filters are available to highlight specific features (ground level points, breaks in the terrain etc) or
even automatically extract features (power line conductors, rail tracks etc)
The limit of the use of filters is the creativity of the user.
The LiDAR point attributes generated by the filters can be stored in attribute files to generate persistent
attributes. When connecting an attribute file to a FLIP7 project the filter results will become available without the need of
the filters. FLIP7 offers a comprehensive set of tools and functions to modify the stored attributes.
CAD
Using CAD functions (draw polyline, draw point etc) FLIP7 allows the user to extract 3D positional information from
any object or feature that can be visualized in the data. These so called drawing objects can be organized on layers. Each
layer can be coloured or visualized independently. FLIP7 can handle unlimited number of drawing objects and layers.
To add more information to extracted lines and points FLIP7 per layer drawing object attributes can be defined
and values can be set either by free input, list selection or default settings per drawing object. The definition of attributes,
selection lists and default values is completely flexible and user definable. As for the number of layers and objects, also
there are no limits to the number of attributes that can be defined.
Import and Export
LiDAR points can be exported (all or based on a filter attribute) to either ASCII files (with selectable fields) or LAS format.
FLIP7 can export an unlimited number of these files at once to produce subsets based on LiDAR point attributes (e.g. to export
point sets of different classes like 'Ground', 'Vegetation', 'Conductor', 'Building' etc)
Drawing objects can be exported and imported in user-definable ASCII files and DXF files. The ASCII file export
supports the export of drawing object attributes for easy integration of the data into 3rd party software like GIS applications.
Raster data (ortho-photos, scanned maps etc) can be imported and exported in World TIFF, BMP, JPG and ECW format.
Registered FLIP7 users can download FLIP7 and the latest upgrades via the FLIP7 faq on this website.
