FLI-MAP Analyst
Fugro developed a software application in order to view, analyze and present FLI-MAP data. This extension enables the user to fully
benefit from all of the various types of data that the different sensors from the FLI-MAP system have collected. The extension was
developed for and in very close cooperation with the Dutch Water Management authorities that need access to actual and accurate
topographic information of the water embankments for their flood defense management.
The application is developed using the ArcGIS8 platform and is designed as an extension similar to Spatial
analyst or 3D analyst. At present the extension is used by 13 Water Boards. The software was designed in such a manner that it can
easily be applied for other market segments.
The software enables a user to create cross and longitudinal profiles at any desired location by the click of a
mouse. The profiles can be plotted instantly using predefined lay-outs or alternatively they can be exported to AutoCAD or text
file formats to be used for engineering purposes. Produced cross and longitudinal pro-files can be added to predefined layouts
which can then be plotted. Four standard layouts are included but new ones can be added by the client and can be customized to
include meta data and or company logo’s etc.
The possible theoretical profiles are based upon the ADVENTUS model that is the standard data model for levees
in the Netherlands. A total of around 10 different types and shapes of levees can be used. With each comparison the area
(volumetric) difference between the theoretical and the measured profiles is displayed.
Besides capturing laser data the FLI-MAP system collects a vast amount of digital imagery to be used by the end
clients. The down looking images are used as input to create ortho rectified image mosaics that can be added in ArcGIS as a
backdrop. The raw images and especially the forward looking give the user a good insight into the terrain and with the simple click
of a mouse these can be called up at any location. In a similar manner the video files can be called up and played by clicking the
map at any desired location.
Geotechnical Analyst
FLI-MAP analyst was developed for water boards in the Netherlands to quickly integrate FLI-MAP data into their GIS systems. The
software enables them to view, analyze, and present the data by using their familiar environment ArcGIS. The software has proven to
be a success and is now in use in the Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom.
Together with our colleagues from Fugro Ingenieursbureau that are specialized in sub surface measurements a new
extension to the FLI-MAP analyst software has been developed. For the maintenance of levees the sub surface conditions are just as
important as the general topography. The new functionality enables users to combine the measurements of the surface with those
taken in the sub surface. Cone penetration tests and drill results can be overlaid on the cross and longitudinal profiles produced
by FLI-MAP. Sub surface data can be imported from the popular Geotechnical Exchange Format (GEF) into a Geodatabase. Besides
presenting this data for analysis, the fact that all sub surface data is stored in a geo database will enable users to maintain
this information in a uniform way.
